Prof. Tolly S.A. Mbwette President of the ACDE Executive Board Vice Chancellor, The Open University of Tanzania
Prof. Tolly S.A. Mbwette is a holder of a
BSc. Engineering (Hons) degree specialized in Civil Engineering since 1981. He
has gained a wide range of management experiences of higher education institutions
at both micro and macro levels. He has for the last twenty nine years been a
team leader of various multi-disciplinary research teams responsible for
treatment of both drinking and wastewater treatment systems that rely on
bio-systems. He has a broad experience in management of higher education
institutions initially through being an Associate Dean responsible for
Research, Publications and Postgraduate Studies for three years in the former
Faculty of Engineering at University of Dar es Salaam after which he assisted
the UDSM Vice Chancellor in Coordinating the much acclaimed University of Dar
es Salaam (UDSM) Transformation Programme for eight years between July 1994 and
April, 2002. Prof. Mbwette has also participated and been involved in co-ordination
of a number of co-operation programmes between Europe and America and
Universities in Africa ranging from East, Central and Southern Africa. More about Prof. Mbwette

| | Stakeholders Workshop | The University of South Africa (UNISA) hosted a stakeholders’ workshop on the formation of a consortium of African Open Universities and establishment of a Continental Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency for distance education in Africa - an initiative of ACDE. The workshop was held between the dates of 21-23 February, 2008. See details of the outcome in the communiqué.
| | ACDE Scholarship Program | ACDE Scholarship Program has been launched with seed funding from the Ford Foundation.
Three scholarships were awarded in 2007 and six scholarships in 2008, on a competitive basis.
ACDE usually accepts only one nomination from each ACDE member institution that then competes with other nominations from across the continent.
Applications for the 2009 awards will be announced to ACDE member institutions in February 2009.
The Scholarship program is meant to expand opportunities to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds
who intent to pursue and enhance careers especially in health, science, technology and education through distance and e-learning programs
with ACDE member institutions. The Finance and Development Committee, a sub-committee of the ACDE Executive Board, administers the scholarship through the ACDE Secretariat.
